The Dorset section of the Jurassic Coast is without doubt one of the most photogenic places along the south coast of England. Packed with iconic landscape features such as Durdle Door, Old Harry Cliffs, Kimmeridge Bay, Corfe Castle, Portland Bill Lighthouse and Pulpit Rock it is a truly breathtaking location that will inspire you from start to finish. Our Dorset photography tour and workshop takes you to the best locations along this fascinating stretch of British coastline.
Durdle Door is one of the most iconic and recognisable natural landmarks along the Dorset coast. It’s a natural limestone arch that has been carved out by the sea over millions of years.
This lovely rock arch offers some great photo opportunities at either sunrise or sunset, and the lovely long pebble beach leading off to Bats Head provides nice foreground interest. You can also photograph it from the cliffs above.
Man o’ War Bay is a picturesque and secluded bay on the other side of the spit of land separating it from Durdle Door. Its pristine beauty, clear waters, and surrounding limestone cliffs are perfect to photograph from above.
The Jurassic Coast is so-named because it showcases 185 million years of Earth’s history in its rock formations, fossils, and landforms. However, it also contains numerous interesting ancient ruins such as Corfe Castle, Knowlton Church and many more.
These locations are great subjects to photograph at sunrise or sunset and especially on misty mornings.
As well as its landscapes, Dorset has some lovely seaside towns and villages to photograph. One of the most interesting is Swanage, and its old pier which has become an iconic landmark among photographers.
At numerous locations along the Dorset Coast you will find beautiful chalk cliffs, but none are more alluring and spectacular than those at Old Harry.
Old Harry is a series of chalk stacks and pinnacles located near Swanage. From the top you get stunning views of the coastline and these towering cliffs. It is especially beautiful to photograph at sunrise.
Last but not least, the stunning promontory at the very tip of the isle of Portland offers two of the Jurassic Coast’s most iconic features: Portland Bill Lighthouse and Pulpit Rock.
Here you can photograph these features as waves crash against the jagged, rocky coastline.
