Slovenia is a little country with a lot to offer photographically. Situated on the eastern edge of the European Alps and right on the cusp where the alpine and Mediterranean climates fight for dominance, its landscape offers an amazing diversity to discover. The jagged mountain peaks, alpine forests, wooden huts and the gorgeous lakes provide an incredible variety of scenery to photograph. Add to that the stunning changing of the colours as autumn takes hold and the misty mornings that are typical at this time of the year means that you have a superb opportunity to experience some fantastic days of landscape photography.
Almost everywhere you look in Slovenia there is a church perched high upon a hilltop or poking out of the morning mist, with a picture-perfect mountain backdrop. We will visit two of the best, Jamnik Church and the Church of Saint Thomas, both backed by the magnificent Kamnik Alps.
Slovenia is blessed with numerous alpine lakes which are easily accessible. Each lake offers a great reflection of the mountainous backdrop, whether the Kamnik Alps, Karavanke Alps or the magnificent Julian Alps (the highest peaks in the country)
The Julian Alps lie in the north-west corner of Slovenia. These mountain peaks tower over the hugely impressive mountain passes of Vrsic and Mangart.
At the peak of autumn these passes are a sight to behold as the gorgeous fall colours contrast with the cool mountain backdrops.
Naturally, being surrounded by all those mountains, water is in abundance in Slovenia. Numerous waterfalls and rivers thunder down mountainsides and through gorges. Spring and autumn are the best times to visit these locations where the water levels are higher and the colours the most vibrant.
Our base for the duration of the tour will be at the fairytale location of Lake Bled.
Of the many great photographic hotspots, Lake Bled has to be the most enchanting. The Church of the Assumption of Mary sits on an island with a medieval castle perched atop a sheer cliff at the lakeside, seemingly standing guard over this special place.
