Tuscany has long been considered one of the most beautiful photography locations in Europe. It possesses gorgeous, golden harvested yellow rolling hills interspersed by the cobbled streets of medieval towns. The mist fills the surrounding valleys at sunrise and they provide the most wonderful view in which to start your day with and in the evenings, capturing the warm glow of the setting sun over the golden, autumnal landscape is an absolute must.
September in Tuscany offers the landscape at its most vibrant and the weather is particularly pleasant and warm. It is also a quieter, more peaceful experience to that in April /May when most of the photography workshops and tours run. We still however get to experience and enjoy the mist in the valleys in the morning, as well as lone chapels, churches, Cyprus tree lined roads, medieval walled towns and the rolling hills and vineyards which will have just been harvested.
Our choice of accommodation for the five nights is the idyllically located Hotel Casanova. Positioned in an olive and cypress park in the very heart of San Quirico d’Orcia, it offers unrivalled views of the valley from the terrace as well as a in-house restaurant, bar-cafe and a spa area that incorporates a large heated pool with 18 air-water jets, a hydro-massage whirlpool and a Finnish Sauna. The hotel is perfectly positioned to reduce the amount of time spent driving, leaving more time for your photography as well as allowing us a short walk into town to dine at some of the wonderful local restaurants too.
Here is our itinerary outlining our schedule.
Day 1 – Saturday 14th September 2024
Pisa International Airport – San Quirico d’Orcia
I will collect the workshop participants at Pisa International Airport in Pisa at 1.30pm. We will drive to the hotel in San Quirico d’Orcia to check-in before heading out for a sunset shoot nearby. Back to the hotel to freshen up and enjoy the evening over a good meal and fine wine.
Day 2, 3, 4 & 5 – Sunday 15th – Wednesday 18th September 2024
We will be out every morning pre-sunrise (7am) before heading back to the hotel for breakfast followed heading out on location for the rest of the day until sunset (7pm). We will eat in both the hotel restaurant and the local restaurants in town throughout the week.
Day 6 – Thursday 19th September 2024
Pisa International Airport, Pisa
An early check out at the hotel this morning (8.30am) to arrive at the airport for 11am followed by the flight home to reflect on what will be a trip of a lifetime. I hope you can join me.
Melvin Nicholson
Melvin Nicholson is the founder of Landscape Locations and a UK based professional photographer.
Melvin has been a full time photographer since 2014 and has been running photography workshops, tours and courses both in the UK and internationally since he started out.
In Melvin’s own words “I love what I do because it allows me to indulge in the very thing that fulfils my life beyond imagination. And I feel lucky to be able to share my passion, enthusiasm and knowledge with others.
Alistair How
I have had a lifelong interest in photography and the outdoors, starting my career at Kodak after studying Geography at Southampton University.
These days I still love taking photographs while sharing the craft and my experiences with others. Passing on the skills that I have learnt over the years in an approachable and friendly manner. I am at my happiest when I see people flourish in their photography.
After many years taking personal and family photos I returned to more serious photography a few years ago when I had more available time. I also gained my Licentiate distinction with the Royal Photographic Society (LRPS) in September 2022 and became president of Harrogate Photographic Society for the 2023/24 season.
Based in North Yorkshire, I am right on the doorstep of a number of photographic hot spots, but also travel far and wide looking for new locations and opportunities. I have been so fortunate in my professional life to be able to travel to some amazing and unusual places and am still discovering new locations for future photography visits.
My work has been featured by various organisations including the Yorkshire Photographic Union and publications in Outdoor Magazine and the Royal Photographic Society (RPS).
Phil Holroyd
Phil is a UK-based photographer with a passion for documenting breathtaking landscapes and creating magnificent images of beautiful places around the UK and beyond.
After picking up his first camera at a very early age, Phil developed his photography skills over the years that followed. Following a successful career as an engineer, he decided to pursue his love for photography as a full time profession.
Phil enjoys travelling and exploring new locations. In particular, he seeks out the dramatic interplay between landscapes and weather. While he enjoys capturing images, he also finds great satisfaction in teaching and helping others maximize their potential behind the camera, offering both technical advice and composition ideas.
We will be staying at the beautiful Hotel Casanova in the heart of San Quirico d’Orcia. This ensures that we are as close as possible to the locations that we will be photographing meaning less time spent travelling in the minibus.
You will each have your own double en-suite room. There is no single occupancy supplement charged.
The hotel also has unrivalled views of the valley from the terrace as well as a in-house restaurant, bar-cafe and a spa area that incorporates a large heated pool with 18 air-water jets, a hydro-massage whirlpool and a Finnish Sauna. The outdoor pool is free to use but there is a daily fee of €30 charged if you would like to use the indoor spa area.
