Exertion Level
Easy – All locations within half a mile from the car, some much closer. Some slippery rocks on the water’s edge and uneven ground and sandy beaches present. A reasonable level of fitness and mobility is required.
Lofoten is without a doubt, one of the most amazing locations to visit for mountain and seascape photography, especially during the winter months. The 3,000ft mountains tower above the numerous little islands which are connected by bridges. The iconic red fishermens cabins (otherwise known as rorbuers) add interest and a wonderful splash of colour to the coastline. The winter months are also the perfect time to see the northern lights too.
This Lofoten landscape photography workshop is a wonderful opportunity to discover the stunning scenery of Lofoten during the height of the winter period, complete with a covering of snow everywhere turning the whole region into a winter wonderland. One of the advantages in visiting Lofoten at this time of the year is that while sunrises start around 10.15am and the sun sets around 2pm, the golden hour in the morning and the blue hour post sunset extends the shooting time to around six hours or so a day, perfect for our needs. The light is also sublime during January, with the sun hovering just above the horizon, creating a stunning ethereal light. All locations visited are reachable within 30-45 minutes from our base near Reine, most only 30 minutes or less so there is not a lot of time spent travelling in the minibus.
Our choice of accommodation for this workshop are two wonderful period homes (one four bedroom and one five bedroom) complete with ocean views, large lounges, and well equipped kitchens.
There are two shared bathrooms including a shower in each in each of the two homes. This is a self catering workshop (as is customary in Lofoten) although we aim to spend our evenings both staying home and eating a communal meal together and also eating out at local restaurants as the prices are reasonable and the quality of the food excellent.

Chris Frost
As a relative latecomer to the world of photography, my eyes were initially opened to the captivating world of photography whilst honeymooning in Japan, before later stumbling into landscape photography in 2012 – a genre I instantly fell in love with appreciating not only its beauty, drama, and variety but the many challenges it presents. My initial passion for capturing wild and rugged seascapes was driven from a lifetime living just a stone’s throw from Dorset’s stunning Jurassic coastline but over recent years, this yearning for raging storm seas has been contrasted and balanced by the quiet calling of Dorset’s hidden woodlands. Wild mornings dodging raging seas now compete with the lure of leisurely ambles through mist shrouded woods, dodging nothing but brambles and the occasional startled deer.
I specialise in atmospheric images of the South West’s ever-changing coastline and intimate treescape scenes of mother nature at her finest, combining floral displays, spectacular conditions and grand woodlands, My unique imagery was recognised in 2020, winning the UK Landscape Photographer of the Year award and placing runner-up in the Wildflowers category of the International Garden Photographer of the Year.
Having arrived too late for the film era, I have always shot digitally and appreciate the flexibility and opportunities it presents. With the trusty Nikon in hand, there is equal enjoyment gained from, and importance placed on all stages of the photography journey from scouting, visualization, and image capture through to post-processing, an element I believe is often key in realising my vision.
