Exertion Level
Easy / Medium / Hard – Most locations are within half a mile from the vehicle although some can be up to an hour’s hike away. Some slippery rocks near waterfalls and uneven rocky paths including the odd uphill section present. A very good level of fitness and mobility is required.
The Faroe Islands are an archipelago of eighteen wild, untamed islands that were created by volcanic activity and the glaciers of the ice age. The Faroes are part of the kingdom of Denmark and although they are self-governing, their way of life is unique with traditions that to this day, remain untouched by modern influences.
For the landscape photographer however, the Faroe Islands presents some of the most outstanding scenery anywhere in the world, with demanding and somewhat challenging weather providing endless opportunities to capture on camera, some of the finest landscape views available.
For this seven night landscape photography workshop, we have recruited the services of none other than Scottish born James Kelly, an experienced photographer and fellow expert in all things Faroes related for not only is he married to a Faroese, but he also spends a portion of his year on the island itself, which gives James an enviable amount of knowledge about the island, its people, and their way of life. What James does not know about the Faroes is not worth knowing and if ever there was a location that required local knowledge in abundance, the Faroe Islands are it.
We have created this workshop for just six attendees, and James will be on hand to provide all the photography tuition you require. You will be based in a beautiful, modern, recently renovated home in Torshavn which is ideally positioned for the locations that we will be visiting, and all meals are included during the workshop, breakfast, lunch, and evening meals. You shall be collected and dropped off at Vagar Airport and transport during the workshop will be provided in the form of a modern, comfortable nine-seater minibus.
As for the scenery, try to imagine standing in front of majestic mountains and turquoise waters that drift over black volcanic sands. Silhouettes of mighty sea stacks that reach out of the waves. Hear the rush of pulsing waterfalls that stream from the cliffs and feel the damp fog against your face, moving mystically across the lush, green valleys before you. Listen to the peace. Breathe the sea air into your lungs. Open your eyes and watch the changing light cast shadows over peaks and dance across fjords from daybreak until dusk with all the promise of northern lights. The most dramatic natural landscapes are right here in the middle of the ocean.
The northern lights (aurora borealis) can often be experienced from the Faroes and because of the scare population, dark skies are all around us. They are truly the eighth wonder of the world. Until you have witnessed for yourself, the spectacular display of the dancing green lights, it is difficult to image just what an amazing impact they will have on you. Aurora chasing is addictive and life enriching.
So, join James on this once in a lifetime opportunity to experience the amazing landscape that is the Faroe Islands.

The locations we will be visiting are listed above and the decision on where and when to visit will very much depend on the weather and light available.
Day 1 – Mon 4th November 2024
Vagar Airport – Torshavn
James will collect the workshop participants at a time to be arranged from the airport before heading to your house at Torshavn (45 minute journey). Once the arrival times of the flights of the six attendees are known, confirmation of a collection time shall be made but it is likely to be mid-late afternoon and James will make several trips to collect everyone who arrives regardless of time.
Day 2 – 7 (Tues 5th to Sun 10th Nov 2024)
Travel to all the locations listed above. There has been additional time built into the workshop to have you revisit your favourite locations to give you an opportunity to capture them in a different light, weather conditions and at a different time of day.
Day 8 – Mon 11th Nov 2024 – Vagar Airport
Sadly the time has come to leave the Faroe Islands behind and board a plane home. Again, depending on everyone’s flights time, a drop off time to the airport shall be agreed but it is likely to be early afternoon. If you wish to stay on in the Faroes to discover it yourself, James can drop you off at a hotel or a car rental office instead.

James Kelly
James Kelly lives and breathes photography.
The Scottish countryside, where he spent his childhood playing, provided him with a profound connection to Scotland’s ever-shifting and untamed weather. This environment also instilled a deep appreciation for nature’s elements and a profound respect for the land. The landscape taught him patience, as he would often wait for hours, seeking the perfect shot. He would go to great lengths to capture images, whether braving the freezing sleet or basking in the brilliant sunlight, traversing coastal cliffs or ascending rugged mountain ranges.
However, James also has a second home – the Faroe Islands. Although not as native as his Scottish roots, he holds an equally strong connection to the Faroe Islands as his partner is Faroese. James has been lucky enough to get to know the islands through a local’s eyes and experience first-hand the photographer’s paradise they present.
