Exertion Level
Medium – We will not be doing any long hikes throughout this tour, however some locations can only be reached on foot, and can take anywhere from 30 to 45 minutes depending on pace. Some of these hikes are at an altitude of around 2250 meters above sea level (7400 Feet), this is where we will shoot the majority of our Astro images, high above the clouds. Some of the hikes pass through terrain that can be rough, steep, or uneven. These sections require good fitness, balance, and mobility and there may be some mild rock scrambling needed to reach some of the coastal locations.
Join Sam Scicluna, a highly experienced astrophotographer and photography guide on this once in a lifetime opportunity to experience the amazing landscape and night skies in Tenerife.
Brilliant night skies, epic volcanic rock formations and dramatic landscapes, Tenerife has a stunning
high-altitude desert to ensure that you capture some great images.
Tenerife is the largest of Spain’s Canary Islands, off West Africa, in the Atlantic Ocean. It is dominated by Mt. Teide, a dormant volcano that is Spain’s tallest peak. Tenerife may be best known for its Carnaval de Santa Cruz, however it has recently become a hot spot for Astrophotography due to its protected dark skies, and indeed the Teide Observatory (Astrophysics) can also be found in Tenerife.
You will start your journey after being collected from Tenerife Norte Airport before being whisked to your 4 Star hotel for six nights in Puerto de la Cruz.
You will be visiting many of the most iconic locations Tenerife has to offer including the stunning Roque Cinchado, which is a volcanic rock formation regarded as emblematic of the island and it is set within the Teide National Park. La Crucita, La Tarta, La Cathedral, and Las Minas will all feature on the itinerary.
Of course, no visit to Tenerife would be complete without experiencing the Milky way over the Teide Observatory in the Mount Teide National Park. The Teide Observatory is Europe’s finest solar telescope and is located 2,390m above sea level. They make stunning subjects to include within your images under the night stars.
This astrophotography workshop in Tenerife will leave you with long lasting memories. There are just six places in total ensuring a small, friendly, informal group with plenty of personalised 1-2-1 tuition on offer from your tour guide and photography tutor Sam Scicluna.
We will be based in the seaside town of Puerto de la Cruz, so we are ideally positioned to reach all the best locations in a relatively short amount of time. As a result of this, we will not have a fixed itinerary, but will go to each location based on the weather and conditions at the time, looking for the best light and weather to give us great images.
Note: The photo tour will be an intense 7 days of mostly shooting throughout the night hours, so make sure you are well rested before the start of the tour!

Sam Scicluna
I was born and raised on the island of Malta, where my love for beautiful seascapes began. I have always enjoyed being outdoors and surrounded by nature. Growing up on an island, has meant that I always had a special bond with the sea, this led to seascapes being a natural comfort zone and starting point in photography.
In 2012 I bought my first DSLR camera and soon fell in love with photography. In 2014, I went on an expedition to climb Mount Etna and later that year also climbed Monte Rosa, spending time in the mountains is what sparked my passion for landscape photography.
Since there are no mountains in Malta, I found myself longing to travel more and more to see the ethereal vistas and majestic mountains. In 2016 I travelled to Iceland for the first time, realising a dream and further affirming my passion for landscape photography. I have always been intrigued and fascinated by severe weather and the sheer power of mother nature, and this has led to me also taking an interest in storm chasing and photographing severe weather phenomena.
Travel has given me the perfect opportunity to learn new techniques and skills while expanding my portfolio of work to also include cityscape photography. I have always been amazed by the night sky, and going camping often has led me to experiment with astrophotography and shooting the night sky. I love outdoor activities such as camping, hiking, climbing, and exploring new destinations. I also love taking time out to appreciate the world around and to assist others in helping them experience the same with their camera.
