Meeting Place
Our meeting place will be in the guesthouse lounge at 6pm before our pre-workshop meal in Portree for the evening. The guest house is located 7 miles north of Portree.
For those who are arriving into Portree itself (normally those who are travelling into the UK from abroad, we can collect you at 5pm from the bus station in Portree itself).
Exertion Level
Easy / Medium / Hard – All locations within half a mile from the car, some much closer (except the Old Man of Storr which is an hour or so uphill). Some slippery rocks near waterfalls and uneven ground. A good level of fitness and mobility is required.
The Isle of Skye offers some of the most dramatic scenery to the landscape photographer in the UK. Situated on the western side of Scotland, this fascinating island offers a wide variety of exciting, inspirational and mesmorising views to be captured on camera.
Dominated by the Black Cuillins, Skye’s highest peak is Sgùrr Alasdair at 992 m (3,255 ft). It is visible from almost everywhere on the island but none more so than at Elgol which is perhaps the most impressive location to see the Black Cuillins in all their glory and Skye is known for its dramatic weather and unrivalled light. Five days on this island will have you return time and time again but be warned, you will fall in love with it.
During our time on Skye, we will visit many of the iconic locations that have made the island famous. From the 160ft tall Old Man of Storr that stands guard high up over the east side of the island to the hugely impressive Quiraing and Trotternish, both created from huge Jurassic landslips. The tremendously atmospheric Elgol from which the dominant and mystical Black Cuillins stand before you across Loch Scavaig. The Fairy Pool waterfalls and Glen Brittle river are truly unique with its aqua coloured water, plunge pools and an underwater arch, sights that will leave you you with long lasting memories.
Sligachan Bridge and its river also feature on the list of locations that you will definitely not want to miss, especially during a glorious sunset as the Red Cuillins glow vibrant orange. Neist Point and its lighthouse that stands high up on the edge of a peninsula on the most westerly point of the island also allow for some spectacular sunsets to be captured here.
The Isle of Skye has earned itself an enviable reputation for delivering spectacular scenery in dramatic weather. You will love it.
Here is a detailed itinerary outlining our schedule. While the itinerary looks fixed, it is really only an indication of the locations we will be visiting and the decision to alter our plans depending on the weather and light will be taken if needed.
Day 1
Sunday 16th February 2025
We will meet in the lounge in the guest house at 6pm ahead of our first workshop meal together in Portree at 7.30pm. This 60 minute ‘Meet and Greet’ will allow everyone to become acquainted and for the workshop briefing to take place. There will be a question and answer session as well as an opportunity to look over your camera equipment.
The evening meal will be taken in Portree at 7.30pm, just a short 7 mile drive down the road.
Day 2 – 5
Monday 17th – Thursday 20th February 2025
Sunrise is 7.45am so we shall start the days with a sunrise session before heading back to the guest house for breakfast. As we have the entire guest house to ourselves, we have a lot more flexibility for breakfast times. After breakfast we shall head out to photograph the rest of the day until sunset, which takes place around 5.30pm.
Post sunset we shall return to the guest house to relax before our evening meal at 7.30pm/8pm. The list of locations that we shall be visiting throughout the workshop are listed below and a decision on which locations to visit shall be taken by the two workshop tutors the evening before.
Day 6
Friday 21st February 2025
Your final day will see us shooting sunrise before heading back to the guest house for breakfast and checking out at 10am ready for your journey home after reflecting on what a fantastic few days you have experienced on Skye

Mal Crawford
North West, UK based Mal’s interest in photography began at art college in his early 20’s, with landscapes becoming his speciality, a genre that still inspires him today. Armed with a Minolta 35mm SLR film camera and a couple of lenses, Mal spent several years learning his craft.
Mal started using Sony cameras around 2007, starting with an a300 DSLR but these days now shoots with Sony mirrorless equipment.
Mal’s interest in landscape photography lies more in capturing the artistic essence of a place rather than standard picture postcard scenes. This allows him to often see a different side to locations which compliments those who he instructs.
Mal has assisted photography workshop tour guides on workshops and tours for some time now and is more than happy to pass on his knowledge, experience and skillset with others.
Loch Eyre House is a beautiful seven bedroom guesthouse a short drive from Portree. I have booked all seven rooms so we have the whole guesthouse to ourselves which will suit our needs perfectly.
